Research profile

Research trajectory & current work.

Federica Fonda works at the interface between conservation ecology, landscape connectivity and environmental impact assessment. Her research uses spatial modelling, GIS, field monitoring and biodiversity data to identify ecological corridors, quantify fragmentation and support mitigation and restoration decisions.

Her PhD at the University of Trieste and University of Udine focused on ecological networks and corridors for biodiversity conservation. This work developed into applied studies on hydropower infrastructure, road ecology and large-scale connectivity in Europe, Nepal, South Sudan and Uganda.

She combines academic research with extensive applied experience in Environmental and Social Impact Assessment, Critical Habitat Assessment and Biodiversity Action Plans for major energy and infrastructure projects. Her current University of Trieste research is supported by the PALLIPES Interreg Italy–Slovenia project. She works on freshwater biodiversity and white-clawed crayfish conservation, including habitat suitability, riparian vegetation, GIS, environmental data integration and cross-border spatial modelling under the supervision of Giovanni Bacaro.
